Abstract

Today the term large area electronics (LAE) encompasses a wide range of products like active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs), X-ray, image sensors and solar cells. The development from the material study to the marketplace has taken in all cases many years, but now this part of the electronic industry is well established with sales exceeding US$ 10 billion in 1997. However, many problems are still open, some of them fundamental, others more technological. In this paper a review of the present status and of the perspective of the LAE will be given, together with a discussion of the major issues facing the industry.
