Abstract

Iron billets found in the Kyrenia Ship off the north coast of Cyprus, which is dated to the late 4th/early 3rd centuries BC, have been examined in order to get information about the quality and the possible origin of the iron. Most of the material had been converted to corrosion products and could only be analyzed for osmium isotopy, but the remaining iron core of one billet has been investigated for microstructure by metallography, for trace elements by LA-ICP-MS and osmium isotopes by NTIMS. Some iron ores and an iron chisel found in Cyprus have been analyzed for comparison. According to the results of this work, the billet consists of a roughly consolidated bloom that do not match Cypriote ores, which suggests that the ship was on her way to Cyprus.
