Recent scholarship has outlined the mechanisms, impacts, and limitations of street experiments. This paper applies those insights to a citizen-led street experiment aimed at enhancing the resilience of a school environment in Ede, the Netherlands. The project successfully improved physical resilience with greenery, improved microclimates, fostered neighbourhood cohesion, created playspaces, and reduced car traffic. While citizens in fluenced radical, feasible, and communicative aspects, they had limited control over strategic and challenge-driven elements. As a result, the experiment's broader transitional impact depended heavily on support from key stakeholders like school management and municipal authorities. Despite notable behavioural and material transformations, institutional and organizational, shifts were minimal. The absence of sustained ownership puts the physical successes achieved under continuous pressure. Future action-oriented research should investigate how to consolidate resilient street initiatives by addressing the complexities of individual learning and creating supportive environments for citizen-led experimentation.

School Managers Perceptions towards Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources
  • Aug 1, 2021
  • International Journal of Renewable Energy Development
  • Dimitrios Drosos + 3 more

Global economic growth is accompanied by increased energy demand, thus conventional fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which are the primary energy sources, are gradually being depleted. At the same time, the combustion of conventional fuel for energy production causes serious adverse effects on the environment and contributes to climate change due to the emitted greenhouse gases. For the above reasons, most of the developed and developing countries especially during the last decades, have introduced various incentives for the greater penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in all sectors of the economy. Concerning the building sector, several measures have been adopted, including the promotion of energy efficiency and energy saving. A significant proportion of the building stock are the school buildings where students and teachers spend a significant proportion of their daily time. Teachers' attitudes and views, especially the school unit managers concerning the use of RES in schools, are important in the effort to rationalize and control energy use. This study was conducted through a structured questionnaire applied to a sample of 510 school managers in Greece's primary and secondary education. The school unit managerial role for the case of Greek schools is performed by the school principal who has both administrative and educational duties. Statistical analysis included the application of Friedman's test and hypothesis test on questions concerning school manager environmental perceptions and energy-saving habits. According to the results, Greek school managers have a high degree of environmental sensitivity, since 97.6 % agreed or strongly agreed that the main concern should focus on energy saving. Furthermore, 71% of the respondent reported to have good knowledge on solar energy, followed by 64% on wind energy while only 34% are knowledgeable on biomass. Almost all the respondents (99%) agreed that it is important to provide more RES-orientated education through the taught curricula. Concerning energy saving behaviour, around 90% reported that they switch off the lights when leaving the classroom and they close the windows when the air-condition is operating. Hypothesis tests revealed a relationship between the school managers' ecological beliefs, the energy saving habits in the school environment, and the recognition of the importance of environmental education. Conclusions highlighted the need to intensify environmental education programs in the school environment concerning RES in schools. This will lead to a higher level of environmental awareness of both teachers and students and therefore to a more dynamic behaviour towards the effort to “greenify” the school environment.

  • Linus Beba Obong + 2 more

This paper on strategies for school environmental management in Nigerian secondary schools was carried out in Calabar, Nigeria. To guide the study three research questions were formulated. This was achieved through administration of structured questionnaires in three randomly sampled schools. Findings show regular grass clearing, sweeping of the school compound and painting, landscaping and planting of flowers, good drainage and refuse disposal are strategies adopted for managing the school environment. While lack of gardeners to keep the school compound clean, erosion, students and teachers not being responsive to environmental issues, difficulties to inculcate in students environmental values due to different home upbringing, lack of funds to procure working tools/implements and waste disposal challenges were some identified challenges in the school environmental management. Three hypotheses were put forward to be tested in the study: 1) There is no significant difference in strategies adopted in the management of school environment 2) Management of school environment has no significant effect on student study/reading habit 3) The challenges of managing school environment have no significant effect on the quality of school environment. Statistical results from tested hypotheses show significant relation and correlation in all. Result for hypothesis one shows that there is significant difference in strategies adopted in the management of school environment. Hypothesis two statistically proved that management of school environment has significant effect on students’ study/reading habit; while the last stated hypothesis revealed that the challenges of managing school environment have significant effect on the quality of school environment. For enhanced and better school environment for sound academic exercise, school environmental management team (SEMT), fore-plan for drainage and waste disposal, school location consideration for new schools, employment of gardeners and cleaners, fumigation of schools, terminal orientation programmes, development of curriculum on environmental management, School inspection and competitions and awards were recommended.

  • Fotini Kyrou + 3 more

Teachers’ perceptions in dealing effectively with critical situations are particularly critical as they can prepare both their students and the school environment to improve the way they recognize and manage school crises and unexpected situations that may occur in their everyday lives. This study investigated, through econometric and experimental analysis, the sampled Greek teachers’ actual behavior and perceptions regarding the existence of crises in the school environment and how they should be managed. The results revealed that students’ misbehavior is the primary problem in schools while parental collaboration with the school and the formation of the crisis management teams can make crisis management more effective. The study’s contribution to the literature, through the experimental and econometrical analysis of attitudes toward crisis management in schools, is twofold: (a) to reveal teachers’ perceived priorities in various crises, which otherwise would not have happened, and (b) to extend the link between organizational theory and crisis management in schools. This study suggests that the importance of crisis management in schools is increasing due to its significant contribution to restoring and maintaining school safety and productivity at a time of crisis.

  • Ricardo Hugo Gonzalez + 5 more

This cross-sectional, stratified, random sample study aimed to identify the school environment for teaching and engaging in physical education in elementary public schools. An inventory assessment was made and interviews were held with school managers in 12 teaching units in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. The data obtained were categorized as follows: lesson availability and frequency, recess, extracurricular activities, facilities, and installations in place. The descriptive analysis used absolute and relative frequencies values. The results showed that all schools involved in the study provide two weekly physical education classes. None of the schools engaged in the development of recreational activities during recess. Data showed that 75% of schools participating in the study provide free extracurricular activities, among which futsal was the most popular (58.3%). Also, 75% of schools had indoor sports facilities, whereas some schools did not have adequate space to hold classes. In the group of schools with facilities, 90% had crossbars and 70% had at least one type of floor markings for sports such as futsal, basketball, and volleyball. Only one school had a recreational room, patio, and a green area. We concluded that the results point to a favorable direction for teaching and engaging in physical education in schools. We discussed how an adequate environment in schools helps students make better lifestyle choices and provides teachers with the opportunity to fully develop their classes and promote student’s health.

  • Toshiaki Aizawa

ABSTRACTIndonesia launched the large-scale community-based block grant programme, the PNPM Generasi, in 2007 with the intention to improve the health and education of children. This study estimates the impacts of the PNPM Generasi on school resources, classroom environments, and school management. While the PNPM Generasi increased community and parental participation in school management, it did little to improve school resources and classroom learning and teaching environments. The existence of heterogeneous impacts across school types and provinces is confirmed. Compared with the notable improvements in health indicators reported in previous studies, the impacts of the PNPM Generasi on school resources and classroom environments are limited.

  • Nur Anisyah + 5 more

The advancement of information technology has had a significant impact on educational management in secondary schools (SMP/MTs). This study aims to analyze the role of information technology in enhancing the effectiveness of educational management, particularly in the aspects of administration and communication. The research employs a library research method, collecting data from various secondary sources such as books, journal articles, research reports, and other relevant documents. The findings indicate that information technology contributes to improving school administrative efficiency through the automation of attendance recording, grade management, and financial administration. Additionally, information technology strengthens communication among teachers, students, parents, and school staff through digital platforms, enhancing collaboration in the educational process. However, this study also identifies challenges in implementing information technology, such as the digital divide, lack of teacher training, and resistance to change. Therefore, strategies are needed to improve infrastructure access, strengthen digital literacy among educators, and establish policies that support the optimal utilization of technology in secondary education. This research provides theoretical insights into the impact of information technology on educational management and can serve as a reference for policymakers and practitioners in developing more effective strategies for implementing information technology, particularly in Islamic education within madrasahs.
