From a Cash-heavy to a Cashless Economy: How UPI Is Revolutionizing Rural India’s Ease-of-doing Business
This study examines the impact of UPI on rural India's ease of doing business, analyzing unstructured feedback from entrepreneurs via topic modeling. Findings indicate that UPI enhances transaction ease, access to funds, customer reach, and transaction transparency.
Digital payments have emerged as the predominant payment method in India since the introduction of the unified payments interface (UPI) in 2016. This study investigates how this digital transformation has impacted the ease-of-doing business for people residing in rural India. We conduct a computational thematic analysis using a topic modelling technique to analyse unstructured feedback given by sole-ownership-type entrepreneurs operating in the unorganized labour market in rural India to identify the beneficial aspects of UPI on their businesses. The analysis reveals that UPI users appreciate the ease of transactions, unconstrained access to funds, wider reach of customers and transparent monetary transactions.

The development of technology at this time is so rapid, that it has given rise to many activities using technology, one of which is payment methods. Previously payment methods were made in cash, now payment methods can be made using a non-cash system. Many companies are developing non-cash payment applications which are also very popular, so the term digital payment or cashless has emerged to make transactions easier and faster. This research aims to find out the influence of digital payment service features on the convenience of consumers in making transactions in e-commerce. This type of research uses quantitative methods by collecting data using questionnaires to find respondents and testing using hypothesis testing using data analysis tools, namely IMB SPSS 26 software. This research uses a sample of 60 respondents. Sampling used purposive sampling and Roscoe’s theory technique with the characteristics of respondents being global institute students. The research results show that digital payment service features have a relationship (correlation). This can be seen in the value where the sig (2-tailed) value between the digital payment service feature (X1) and ease of transaction (Y) is 0.000 < 0.005, which means there is a significant correlation between the digital payment service feature variable and ease of transaction.

This article examines India’s ambitious digital transformation program that has sustained over the last decade. The digital transformation effort started around 2009 with the creation of the digital identity program and continues until now with additional layers of digital payments, data empowerment architecture, open network for digital commerce, and several others. Using the interpretive narrative approach, we examine the empirical case of three core digital transformation initiatives commonly referred to as the India Stack: (1) Aadhar – the digital identity system, (2) Unified Payment Interface – the digital payment infrastructure, and (3) Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture – a data sharing architecture. Our findings suggest that institutional leadership and stakeholder co-production are the main drivers behind the success of digital transformation in India. The leadership provided the sustained vision, institutional continuity, and the legal and regulatory framework for digital transformation initiatives. Stakeholder partnerships from across public, private, and non-profit agencies were crucial to the design and delivery of the program. This study offers theoretical insights and practical lessons for scholars and practitioners alike for how a large-scale digital transformation is implemented and sustained in a complex environment.

Rural India has crucial role to play in India's economy with the emerging changes of digital payments from physical cards and wallets to newer forms of payments such as unified payment interface (UPI), Bharat QR, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, among others. The Indian economy has been dominated by cash. But the increased Smartphone adoption and favorable regulatory policies have created the baseline infrastructure required for a leapfrog growth in digital payments. Pay TM, one of the leading mobile wallets in the country, claims to have acquired more than 5 million merchants using QR code. Digital giants like Google and Face book offer seamless payment services leveraging UPI through Google Pay and WhatsApp Pay respectively. E-commerce companies like Flipkart also offer payments solutions through PhonePe. We expect digital payments to evolve rapidly over the next few years, and non-cash spend to overtake cash spend by 2020. Leveraging technology platforms for effective program delivery poses unique challenges. Using technology requires learning new ways to make demands and withdraw benefits, and new norms and modes of local behavior. In this manuscript, its cover information regarding challenges and opportunities of digital payments faced by rural India.

Improving digital payment trends in rural India is crucial given the growing impact of ICT penetration, demonetization, and digital activities for small businesses in rural sectors. The shift to digital payments can offer benefits such as transaction transparency, reducing parallel economy, and improving ease of doing business. Although various digital wallets such as Paytm, Mobikwik, and PhonePe have been introduced and the government has launched UPI solutions like the BHIM app, rural banking consumers still struggle to embrace digital payments due to the lack of digital literacy. India has a large rural population, but only a small percentage is digitally literate, hindering digital payment adoption. This research study examines the significance of digital literacy in the current banking environment, focusing on issues, opportunities, and difficulties related to the adoption of digital payments in the rural banking sector.

Executive Summary My project's objective is to look into how customers behave when using digital payment options. To bolster the case for e-payments, this study looks at the current inefficiencies in government payment systems and estimates the potential strategic and financial benefits of switching to electronic government payment flows. Since digital payment methods are more widely used and effective, impoverished rural residents are probably going to engage more. This will also help the central government achieve its long-standing goal of reducing poverty and hunger through its food subsidy, housing, and welfare programs. As a result of new business models and technological improvements, they now have a powerful tool in the shape of digital payments, also referred to as electronic payments or "e-payment" systems. Thanks to digital payments, every poor household in India—roughly 80 to 100 million—may have unparalleled access to safe and useful aid directly from the government, bypassing intermediaries. A digital payment infrastructure enables further expansion into rural India, where traditional payment methods remain inadequate in terms of convenience, accessibility, and reliability. Implementing digital payment systems has both direct and indirect benefits, such as improved government service delivery, decreased corruption, potential improvements in government service consumption, and a 15%–20% boost in low-income households' per capita income. This degree of connectivity is driving the move away from cash payments made through digital channels, whether from dematerialized cards kept in digital wallets or the cloud or from new digital payment systems.

Digital payment ecosystems have emerged as a transformative tool in advancing financial inclusion in rural India. Over the past decade, initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and mobile banking applications have enabled rural households to access financial services with greater ease. This research paper uses secondary data from government reports, industry analyses, and scholarly articles to examine the adoption trends of digital payments in rural regions and their impact on financial inclusion metrics. The study finds that digital payments enhance banking penetration, reduce dependence on cash, and facilitate microcredit access. However, challenges such as limited digital literacy, infrastructure gaps, and socio-cultural barriers remain. The paper concludes with recommendations for policymakers and financial institutions to accelerate digital payment adoption and deepen financial inclusion in rural India.
