Abstract

It is very common to see Froebel's name in the educational books followed by Rousseau and Pesstalozzi in order to clarify their educational innovation tasks under the name of child‐centred education. It is, however, very rare to mention on him with the matter of religious education. It seems quite grotesque that he has been nearly unnoticed in connection with Christian education, even though Froebel had clear ideas on Christian education and practised them. It is meaningful to pursue traces of his influence on church education like the Sunday school in the history of Christian education apart from his own writings and religious education practice. In this papers we shall examine how nineteen century Sunday school reformers understood and adopted his educational ideas. Although the Sunday school has more than two hundred years history, the two Sunday school movements during the letter part of nineteenth century in America and in England will be presented.
