Abstract

The longstanding professor of Roman law at the Imperial and Royal (k. k.) Jagiellonian University of Krakow, FriedrichZoll the Elder (1834–1917) is considered to be closely connected with the beginning of modern Polish Romancestudies. Zollʹs rejection of Pandectics and his open commitment to a ‘historical approach’ in the doctrine ofRoman Law are highly credited as great merits. Zoll wrote three basic papers concerning the future design of theteaching of Roman law at the Austrian universities. These three ‘program documents’ (written in the period 1873–1900) are discussed in the article. First, the person of Zoll and his most important works will be outlined, second thethree ‘program papers’ mentioned will be presented in greater detail, and finally Zoll’s main work will be analyzed –the ʺPandect Textbookʺ, which differs conspicuously from most other Pandect manuals of this epoch in its declared‘anti‐pandectistic’ point of view.
