The present paper provides the usage of phraseological units in newspaper headlines during the Ukrainian crisis which are analyzed with the aim of examining how idioms in media headlines impact the overall message being conveyed and its interpretation by recipients. The corpus consists of newspaper headlines collected from various online portals (rts.rs, blic.rs, nova.rs, rs.n1info.rs, informer.rs, politika.rs). We selected ideologically diverse media sources to examine how different media outlets inform about the same events. As control sources for this research, we used the Dictionary of Serbo-Croatian Literary and Folk Language of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Dictionary of the Serbian Language of the Matica Srpska, Josip Matešić's Phraseological Dictionary of Croatian or Serbian Language, and Đorđe Otašević's Phraseological Dictionary of the Serbian Language. The identified phraseological units were semantically classified and analyzed based on their expressive value, and then interpreted from the perspective of critical discourse analysis.

This study sought to investigate aspects of gender as represented in one of the currently used English language series, namely, Top Notch Series from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. This series is widely used for adult language learners from beginner to advanced levels in numerous Iranian language institutes. In effect, the study analyzed the series in terms of three major aspects of gender (relations, positions, and content). To this end, Fairclough’s (2001) three-dimensional model, as a well-established CDA model, which emphasizes the importance of language/power relationship, was adopted in order to extract the ideologies comprising the foundation of this series. The findings revealed that the series represents both genders in a somewhat balanced way. In addition, the series presents both genders equally in such a way that stereotypical norms ingrained into learners are nearly removed. Furthermore, this textbook is argued to have adopted the discourse of marketing and advertising by exploiting both genders, especially the females.

Discursive construction of staff identities at universities’ websites is deliberately created to categorically identify the staff according to their positions. The constructions of these identities are normally implicit in nature. The study attempts to identify the power relations with regard to the ‘WE’ and ‘I’ dichotomy in discourse from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. In addition, corpus techniques also aided this study to find the collocates of these two pronouns. Transitivity analysis was conducted to categorise processes associated with each pronoun. So, the processes associated with each pronoun are a way of identifying the role played at the institution level. The focus was on specific personal pronouns ‘We’ and ‘I’ for their use, mainly, as inclusive and exclusive strategies. The data was collected from international universities’ websites. The text was selected from the ‘welcome note/letter’ by Rectors, Vice Rectors, Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, and Presidents. The universities selected for this study are from various geographical areas, namely; Universiti Science Malaysia (USM) in Malaysia, Yarmouk University (YU) in Jordan, and University of Birmingham (UB) in the United Kingdom. The analysis indicates that the use of the pronouns has a social and administrative hierarchical significance. The social actors are represented according to the specified role to play in their respective institutions.

This chapter sought to investigate aspects of gender in one of the currently used English language series, namely New Headway Plus: Special Edition within the conservative context of Saudi Arabia. The series is used for female/male adult language learners from beginner to intermediate levels in King Abdulaziz University at the foundation year program, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In effect, the research analysed the images in the series in terms of gender positioning in images from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. The findings revealed that the series is biased in terms of gender representation. First, there was a huge gap between the number of male and female images. Second, males were depicted in a wide range of social contexts in their single images compared to females. Third, males had a higher status than females in the single images in all the books under investigation. Finally, the body language of males in the series indicated laboriousness in the work environment, while females’ body language communicated a combination of relaxed and dreamy gestures. At the end, we suggest the need for a glocalized edition where images of females are empowered with greater equality and equity.

The present study tackled the effect of ideology on the translators’ work, which may intensify when they have a different religion or culture. It was located within the framework of political discourse in the field of Translation Studies. It aimed at analyzing both political discourse and its translation from a critical discourse analysis perspective. The study at hand analyzed both political discourse and its translation, taking into account Fairclough’s perspective of discourse analysis as a linguistic analysis and texts from contexts in which discourse is produced. Moreover, the study analyzed political discourse from Van Dijk’s perspective of critical discourse analysis to find implied meaning either in discourse or in its translation and the translator’s intervention in the translation process. It highlighted the power existing in the political discourse by stating that it is loaded with ideology and by proving that translation is considered to be a production of a new discourse and a social, political, and cultural act. The study adopted a qualitative approach based on the use of the Critical Discourse Analysis approach adopted by Fairclough (1989) and the notion of interpretation. Working within the framework of this approach, the study revealed that many translation strategies were used to achieve functional equivalence. By using some strategies such as deletion, explicitation, addition, and literal translation, the study concluded that translations did not fulfil the semantic and contextual criteria of the “fidelity rule” and the “coherence rule’. The study also showed that the use of techniques and selection of excerpts to be translated played an important role in monitoring the target culture audience in the sense that translators affect the translation process by producing their own ideology.

News report, an important way of disseminating information, is always readily accepted without any prejudice. However, the ideology embedded in it is often ignored by readers. In response to the call for people’s ideology among inclusive language, this research draws on the perspective of critical discourse analysis to investigate what the similarities and differences of inclusive language used in Chinese and Thai news report and the reasons behind the discrepancy. Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework, this research collects 4 separate news reports from People’s Daily and Siam Daily to examine the hidden ideology in inclusive language. The analysis reveals that both media are aware of the importance of inclusive language and use it to reduce ambiguity and stigma in reports. These findings have significant implications for institutions such as public spaces or the media should standardize the use of inclusive language, where necessary.

The article discusses the possibility of using author’s dictionaries as sources for replenishing the general language explanatory dictionary of the Ukrainian language. By the beginning of the 20th century, Ukrainian author’s lexicography acquired clear features of a separate vocabulary direction. Index words, concordances, complete and differential dictionaries, monolingual and bilingual have been published. In addition to dictionaries in a book format, electronic dictionaries, online dictionaries are now being created. Оne of the tasks of the writer’s dictionary is to describe the individual characteristics of the author’s language, in a broader sense, to popularize the linguistic personality. On the other hand, the material from the author’s dictionary serves as a factual basis for updating the register, semantic, stylistic characteristics, illustrative material of general language explanatory dictionaries. A number of researchers emphasize the need for a close relationship between explanatory lexicography and the author’s one for the successful development of national vocabulary work. “Dictionary of the language in Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s works” in 3 volumes occupies a special place among the author’s dictionaries for such characteristics as structure, volume. It includes all words, phraseology contained in a six-volume edition of the writer’s works, in other publications, in archival works. Kvitka-Osnovianenko is the founder of the prose genre in Ukrainian literature. As evidenced by the materials of the “Dictionary of the Ukrainian language” in 11 vol., its compilers turned to Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s works to fill in the vocabulary zones. Nevertheless, the materials of the “Dictionary of the language in Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s works” contain language units that may be of interest to compilers of large explanatory dictionaries. These are deminitives that are characteristic of the language of many genres of Ukrainian literature, as well as phraseological units. An example of the author’s non-fiction lexicography is the dictionary of the language of the publicist I.M. Dziuba, which is currently being developed. In Soviet times, the works of a well-known literary critic and publicist were not used as literary sources for the selection of words or illustrative material in explanatory lexicography. The materials of the language dictionary of I.M. Dziuba represent a significant resource for replenishing the vocabulary of the explanatory dictionary, for filling in the structural zones of the dictionary entry. The presented specific examples of word usage by the two authors correspond to lexical, word-formation norms. Further scientific and lexicological study of such linguistic facts will show the possibility of their involvement in explanatory lexicography. Keywords: author’s lexicography, general language explanatory dictionary, vocabulary register, H.F. Kvitka-Osnovianenko, language of works by I.M. Dziuba.

This paper is devoted to identification of specific characteristics of Russian and Serbian phraseological units. The author considers the phraseological units from structural and semantic aspect and pays special attention to the national and cultural component of the studied units, which cause the greatest difficulties for foreigners. Identification of the given component is carried out by linguocultural analysis of components of phraseologicaly related word combinations. The material of research was comprised based on data from lexicographical dictionaries of Russian and Serbian languages. The phraseological units – toponyms are reviewed as a separate group and are, in the author’s opinion, bearers of rich linguoculturological information. The author identifies three main sources of imagery of these units: characteristics of the geographical position of the object; important historical and cultural events, as well as prominent historical figures, which brought fame to the region; lifestyle and crafts of local residents. The analysis allowed the author to identify specific national and cultural characteristics of a number of Russian and Serbian toponyms. This work is of an applied nature. Results of the study can be used in the teaching the Russian language as second Slavic language.

Ecological literacy is an important part of forming an environmentally conscious generation. One way to foster ecological literacy is to include ecological components in student books in schools. This research analyzes the texts in Indonesian textbooks from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. The Critical Discourse Analysis used in this research is Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. There are three dimensions of critical discourse analysis study, namely text analysis, text production analysis, and social practice analysis. Data collection was carried out using the read and labelling technique. The results showed that text analysis has represented ecology and ecological awareness, while text production analysis and social practice analysis are still limited to ecological elements, not yet referring to the current situation in the field.

The aim this article a critical discursive analysis of the “management plan” genre of a public institution of higher education, from 2012 to 2015, located in southeast Brazil. The aforementioned plan is inserted in the discursive practice of strategic management, specifically the institutional, bureaucratic management, and is used as an instrument for decision-making. The goal of this analysis will be to discuss the first step of the “management plan”, named “organizational policies”. We can see that, while elaborating declarative sentences, there is an evaluation of the statements regarding what is to be considered relevant to the institutions by means of the ideological discourse on neoliberal ideals and market behavior. The adoption of market-oriented managerial tools has been a constant in public administration. The public administration looks for bases of organizational practices in the private sphere. This mimicry is still present in the field, and the search for new managerial practices still crosses the imaginaries of the public managers. However, the increasing incorporation of a market-oriented, neoliberal logic, mainly in the adoption of strategic planning, can still be verified. The conclusion presented in this paper serves to foment the debate on the strategies formulated for the Brazilian public service and the methodological applicability of the critical discourse analysis. This meets the emerging need to systematize and integrate distinct theoretical and methodological approaches in the field of organizational studies when strategy is studied as a social and discursive practice.

This paper will discuss how two media (websites) NU Online and Suara Muhammadiyah counteract radicalism in terms of the Islamic state discourse. The post-reform discourse on the Islamic State is not only in seminar forums with a physical presence but has penetrated internet sites, Facebook, WA and others. The purpose of this paper is to answer three main problems, first, what are the radical aspects of the idea of an Islamic state published by the NU Online website and the Suara Muhammadiyah website? Second, how is the deradicalization of the NU Online website and the Suara Muhammadiyah website in terms of the Islamic state in Indonesia? and third, what is the ideology behind the NU Online website and the Suara Muhammadiyah website in deradicalizing the Islamic state in Indonesia? To answer these three main problems, this paper uses Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach. Fairclough was chosen because he has an in-depth study of language as a practice of power. Fairclough's critical discourse analysis focuses on the study of three interrelated things, namely text, discourse practice and sociocultural practice. This paper finds several things. First, the aspects of radicalism discussed by NU Online and Suara Muhammadiyah are on intolerance of the subject, An ahistorical concept and symbolic and physical violence. Second, the way of deradicalization of NU Online and Suara Muhammadiyah is through normative theological arguments, arguments on the historical practice of Islamic social politics and Indonesian factual conditions. Third, the ideology of NU Online is al-Sha>fi'i> with the development of an open Sufism epistemology and the Suara Muhammadiyah ideology which is the ideology of schools without madhhab in the form of progressive Islam.
