Abstract

Abstract A description is provided for Franzpetrakia okudairae . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Coix lachryma-jobi (syn. C. agrestis ). DISEASE: Inflorescence smut; in infected inflorescences the floral parts are entirely destroyed and no seed is formed. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: China and Japan (IMI Distribution Map 631, 1991). TRANSMISSION: The powdery ustilospores are disseminated by wind and probably to a limited extent by rain. The chains of sterile cells form a brush-like structure on which the spores are exposed and there is some hygroscopic movement. No detailed studies have been reported.
