Abstract
Franz Alexander Nissl (1860–1919) was a German neuropathologist and a fine clinician. While studying at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Munich, Germany), under the neuroanatomist Aloys von Gudden (1824–86), Nissl won an award for his medical doctoral thesis (The pathological changes in the nerves cells of the cerebral cortex, in our own translation from the original German title). The work described in this thesis provided the basis for the development of Nissl's staining technique, which would become crucial for studying the brain.
