Abstract

The author examines the main points of the biography of Franjo Tuđman as the most prominent politician of modern Croatia. Tuđman's biography has a wide scope: a Yugoslav partisan, a high-ranking military officer, a political party official, an academician, a dissident and, finally, a politician. Although Tuđman has been the subject of many studies in the Croatian and English-language literature since the beginning of the 2000s, some pages of his biography still remain in the shadows. Despite the fact that in Croatia official apologetics have been expressed on the role and place of Tuđman in the breakup of Yugoslavia and the formation of the political system in Croatia (which still broadly exists), there are also other views that give room for greater skepticism about the developments in the 1990s. The author provides a brief overview of this sensitive issue.
