Abstract

The fracture characteristics of Fe 3 Al and Fe 3 Al- 5M (M = Ti, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and Si) intermetallics were studied by scanning electron microscopy. River line patterns which are characteristic features of cleavage fracture were observed in binary Fe 3 Al. Fe 3 Al-5Cr and Fe 3 Al-5Ti intermetallics showed mixed (intergranular + transgranular) mode of fracture. Fe 3 Al-5M 1 (M 1 = V, Nb, Ta, Mo and Si) cracked in a brittle manner during thermomechanical processing at 1000 °C. This is due to the formation of brittle phases in these alloyed intermetallics which leads to crack initiation and subsequent failure.
