Abstract

AbstractIn this chapter fractal dimension modeling in electrical discharge machining is discussed. Machining operations are carried out for different combinations of pulse current, pulse-on time and pulse-off time on mild steel, brass and tungsten carbide materials. The generated machined surfaces are measured to calculate fractal dimension. The experimental results are then analyzed to model fractal dimension using response surface methodology. From the response surface models, it is seen that the effect of the cutting parameters on fractal dimension is different for different materials. For tungsten carbide and brass, both pulse current and pulse on time play a significant role in determining the fractal dimension while for mild steel it is only the pulse current that plays the significant role. A comparison of the response surface models for fractal dimension in different materials reveals the fact that these models are material specific.KeywordsFractal dimension (D)EDMRSMMild steelBrassTungsten carbide
