Abstract

Held at the modern Palais des Congres convention centre near the Niger River in central Bamako, Festival Ondes de Liberté was primarily intended for media professionals and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations that use radio for publicity. The majority of the participants were directors of francophone FM radio stations in West Africa, although a handful of lusophones, mainly from Guinea-Bissau, also participated. The conference organizers are trying to expand the appeal of the conference to radio professionals from all of Africa, and attracted participants from as far away as Algeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi. The importance of the event within Mali was highlighted by an opening performance by the country's renowned Ensemble Instrumentale Nationale
