Abstract

By means of heating in triethylammonium formate given by 5HCO2H·2N (C2H5)3, hydrogenation of 5-methylidene bond attached to barbituric acids was effected in general. The method was found to be convenient for preparation of 5-arylmethylbarbituric acids and some other 5-alkylbarbituric acids with certain advantages : good yield of the products and selectivity at the double bond of 5-position.
