Abstract

The formation of long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases in Mg-10Gd-1Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy is investigated in this study. The LPSO phases observed in the as-cast, solution-treated and aged conditions are examined systematically by using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Various types of LPSO phases including 10H, 14H, 18R and 24R are observed. Besides the known LPSO phases, the LPSO phase with the stacking periodicity of the close-packed atomic planes along the [101¯1] direction of the α-Mg matrix is observed after solution treatment at 500 °C for 12 h. In addition, the results show that the second phase, solute segregation and heat treatment temperature have significant influences on the formation of LPSO phases.
