Abstract
Folk song lyrics, a special type of verbal communication, are examined in the context of the Hollywood feature film. Dramatic films, selected from the work of director John Ford, illustrate Ford's recurring use of familiar folk song lyrics to develop filmic characterization, communicate personal thematic concerns about community and nature, and enhance audience identification.
