Abstract

Abstract Chapter 5 details how documentaries use various techniques to build seamless experiences for the audience, turning materials that are from wildly different sources and contexts into a single coherent flow. Sound is used to join together disparate shots and imply continuity within scenes. Scenes are stitched together with pivot clips, which act as subtle redirections of the audience’s attention. Pauses are used in order to emphasize the pivots and to strengthen the emotion of particular moments. An alternate approach is to emphasize the discontinuity between scenes by building stark contrasts and juxtapositions so that the connection between scenes is accomplished with subtext rather than more overtly. In these cases, other points of connection usually exist, such as the formal qualities of the shots or broader thematic threads.
