Abstract

In order to help predict the extent of the flow of pollutants through a lock, an extensive field investigation was undertaken by the New Orleans District of the U. S. Corps of Engineers. The test was performed at the Inner Harbor navigation Canal Lock, which is located on the east bank levee of the Mississippi River at New Orleans. The lock chamber has a usable length of 207 m and is 23 m wide. The average volume of water passes per lockage during the test was 19,000 m³. During the test program, the water depth ranged from approx 13 m (i.e., canal elevation) when the lock was empty.
