Abstract
Electrically powered aircraft are an emerging area of technical interest. It is important to build rapid synthesis methods to support quantitative systems Proper requires a careful matching of the propulsion system to the airframe; both the thrust profile and the overall efficiency of the propulsion system are of utmost importance because aircraft must generate enough thrust to overcome their own drag. It is crucial to the propeller to the motor so that the designer may evaluate the propulsion system performance both on design and off design. This paper develops an efficient technique to utilize 2D airfoil test data to simultaneously optimize both on design and off design propeller performance. It also presents trade studies examining, for a reference airframe, the potential best match of motor (brush electrical, brushless electrical and internal combustion engine) to fixed pitch propeller.
