Abstract

The following new coprophilous species are described: Podospora caligata found on cow dung from Tanzania, P.papillata on elephant and zebra dung from Kenya, P. deropodalis on zebra dung from Kenya, P. spinulosa on cow, elephant, and zebra dung from Kenya and Tanzania, and P. multispora on cow dung from Kenya. These species have been developed in moist chambers at room temperature in the Department of Botany, University of Toronto. The genus Podospora Cesati is restricted to species in which the ascospores have an apical, circular germ pore, a hyaline basal cell, and hyaline gelatinous appendages. These appendages have been studied under phase-contrast microscope and in India ink mounts.
