This research is a study of five faces of oppression of Lamaholot women in three short stories by Silvester Petara Hurit, namely “Ina Tonu”, “Mama Eta” and “Pilkades”. Using Iris Marion Young's notion of oppression, the focus of this research is to identify the forms of oppression experienced by women and to understand the mechanisms by which customary, religious and government institutions practice this oppression. This research uses a discursive approach with a qualitative interpretation reading method. The results show that in these three short stories there are practices of exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperalism and systemic violence. This oppression is rooted in patriarchal structures, institutional control and cultural stereotypes. Therefore, through these three short stories, Hurit not only describes the reality of gender inequality but also criticizes the oppression experienced by Lamaholot women. In addition, these findings are expected to expand the socio-cultural study of literature and inspire advocacy for gender justice in the Lamaholot community in East Flores.

Chapter Three. Male Domination, Female Fury In Kuwaiti Women’S Short Stories
  • Jan 1, 2009
  • I Tijani

This book examines the representation of Kuwaiti women's struggle against male domination and begins with two short stories which are discussed in this chapter: Hayfāʾ Hāshim's al-rahib (1953) and Laylā al-ʿUthmān's Milaff imraʾa (1979). Despite the gap of over two decades between the dates of their publication, these two stories constitute some of the early Kuwaiti women's fictional texts. They both explore the theme of 'gender and violence' as a way of reflecting the objectification and oppression of women in pre-oil Kuwaiti society. Women's subjection to male physical violence is another major theme in al-Intiqam. Considered a major social problem in Kuwait as well as in most Third World societies, childlessness is given an important thematic status in milaff. Both Hayfāʾ Hāshim's al-Intiqam and Laylā al-ʿUthmān's represent women's physical and mental potency in undermining patriarchal hegemony. Keywords: al-Intiqām al-rahīb; Hayfāʾ Hāshim; Kuwaiti women's short stories; Laylā al-ʿUthmān; male domination; Min milaff imraʾa; pre-oil Kuwaiti society
