Abstract

We present an analysis of the 3-dimensional abelian Higgs model using finite size scaling theory. When gauge and Higgs field are in different representations of the gauge group U(1), we find disordered and Higgs separated by a second-order line. The Wilson loop shows an area and perimeter behaviour respectively in these two phases. When the Higgs and gauge fields are in the same representation, there is a simple phase for all finite gauge and Higgs coupling.
