Abstract

A finite element method (FEM) model was used to describe the mechanical behaviour of Jatropha curcas L. seeds under linear compression loading. Computer simulations which uses explicit FEM algorithm can be used to significantly improve the study of non-linear visco-elastic and plastic behaviour with a permanently deformed structure such as J. curcas L. seeds. Here, an empirical equation describing the deformation properties of pressed seed and the verification of its relationship with the simulation model defining the plastic behaviour of unripe, ripe and over-ripe seeds of J. curcas L. at the oil point was developed. The results were statistically analysed and showed that the FEM can be used to describe the measurements accurately for all stages of seed maturity of J. curcas L. This indicates that the FEM model developed is an important tool in the study of mechanical behaviour of J. curcas L. seeds and it can provide valuable information for optimising and designing of pressing machines. ► We use FEM model for mechanical behaviour of Jatropha seeds under compression. ► We compare models of three different stages of maturity (ripe, unripe, over-ripe). ► Models include visco-elastic and visco-plastic behaviour. ► Visco-elastic behaviour of the structure is connected with a content of oil in the seed. ► More efficient pressing will be achieved if seeds are vertically oriented.
