Abstract

In the present work we show that when different samples of silicate rocks exhibit only small differences in the composition of their major elements, as is the case of tholeiitic basalt in the Hiblean region, the method of direct comparison between PIXE energy spectra (fingerprint PIXE method) associated with the statistical analysis, can be considered an important tool for the identification of the provenance quarries. Results of PIXE measurements performed at the Catania 2.5 MV Van de Graaff accelerator are presented together with multivariate analysis of the data.
