Abstract

Abstract In contrast to the processes of trial and sentencing, punishment takes place away from the public gaze. As we saw in the previous chapter, the staging of the trial is designed for public consumption. The moment of sentence is the dramatic high point upon which public interest and debate centres. Thereafter, the penal process largely disappears from view and it is almost an act of faith that the sentence is actually carried out. For the most part, the public have little idea where, how, or with what consequences sentences are realized. Implemented quietly and without ?ourish, their form, content, duration, and purposes remain obscure.
