Abstract

A nonfilter-based add multiplexer for wavelength-division-multiplexed communications, operating without interception of through traffic channels is designed by employing a novel unidirectional grating assisted coupler. Realized by a matched periodic modulation of the refractive index and loss (gain), it enables the break down of optical reciprocity and, thus, allows wavelength-independent one-way light power transmission. A single add device can serve for uploading any wavelength to the through stream.
