Abstract

Summary A case report of amebic hepatitis presenting as fever of unknown origin and diagnosed by means of the therapeutic trial with emetine has been discussed. Fever has been discussed as a valuable adjunct to diagnosis in atypical cases and as an aid in following the course of the disease. Reports from the literature indicate that sustained temperature drops usually occur within 5 days of emetine or chloroquine therapy, although exceptional cases may not show a response until 10 to 12 days. Occasional cases may be emetine- or chloroquine-refractory, especially if abscess is present.
