Abstract

Ferrous sulfate is an inorganic salt used for the treatment of iron deficiency, iron deficiency-induced anemia, and with patients taking epoetin. Ferrous (Fe+2) sulfate is more readily absorbed after oral administration than is iron in its ferric (+3) state. Ferrous sulfate is used in a heptahydrate and an anhydrous form. The anhydrous form contains 32.5% elemental iron, whereas the heptahydrate form contains 20% elemental iron (by weight). It is important in iron supplementation to base the dose and the potential of toxicity on the amount of ingested elemental iron. Troubling side effects of gastrointestinal upset decrease compliance in adults. Iron overdose in children under the age of 6 years is a significant clinical problem that is due to accidental ingestion of iron containing vitamins. Keep all iron containing vitamins out of the reach of children.
