Abstract

The p(1×1) Co and Fe 1 monolayer (ML) films epitaxially grown on Cu(001) are ferromagnetic. For Co, the perpendicular remanence magnetization of 1 ML and thicker films is zero and no decrease of the magnetization is observed up to 400 K. For Fe the remanence magnetization of a 5 ML film at 30 K is perpendicular to the film plane and hysteresis loop is quadrangular with a coercive field of 650 Oe. The Curie temperature is 390 k. No perpendicular remanence magnetization is observed for the same film at room temperature and for the 1 ML film at 30 K.
