By contrast, detrimental psychological and social consequences of obesity make themselves felt already at the lowest grades of obesity. The somatic aspects of etiology and pathogenesis in obesity and its physical sequelae have received more attention and are better understood than the psychopathology pertaining to the obese state. No predominating, let alone specific, psychopathological profile characterizes obese persons. This is not surprising in view of their great number and of the many factors that may lead to a positive energy balance. On the other hand, psychological factors are more important in obesity than in most other disorders.
