Abstract
These authors have produced a comprehensive book on cataract surgery and intraocular lenses that has few flaws. The 31 chapters cover a wide range of topics, beginning with the history of lens implantation, physical chemistry of lens implant material, lens power calculation, corneal endothelial studies, histology of postoperative specimens, and a detailed discussion on cystoid macula edema. They review the evidence concerning cystoid edema and conclude, as have others, that it is now an "established fact that an intact posterior capsule protects the macula from edema" (p 134). The current evidence for damage from ultraviolet light is also reviewed; yet, despite lack of clinical evidence that long-term exposure to ultraviolet light induces a maculopathy, the authors advise ultraviolet filtering spectacles to protect against this potential damage. "Overall, this book gives detailed coverage to the whole field of cataract surgery." The next portion of the book describes the authors' preferred technique
