Abstract
The available criteria for distance-to-fault measurement are summarized. Methods using the electrical quantities of the short-circuit loop are discussed in detail. Influencing factors and suitable compensation methods are outlined. The advantage of applied digital techniques is demonstrated. A description is given of a digital operating fault locating device, for application with existing analog-operating mechanical or static protective relaying systems. Future possible completely computerized solutions integrated into digital protection systems are discussed.
