Abstract

The cellular long-chain fatty acids of 14 strains representing 4 species of the genus Schizosaccharomyces Lindner were extracted by saponification and analyzed as methyl esters by gas chromatography. The species of the genus Schizosaccharomyces were characterized by the presence of palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid as the major fatty acid components. These strains can be divided into 2 groups on the basis of their fatty acid content. The first group was characterized by the presence of linoleic acid and the second group by the absence of linoleic acid.
