Abstract

Children with cancer present a variety of challenges for the anesthesiologist as they can have dysfunction of virtually any organ systems related to their underlying malignancy or the toxicity of treatment. Patients in cancer remission often suffer varying degrees of chronic effects of cancer treatment that impact their anesthetic care decades later. As treatment options for pediatric cancer have expanded, it has become increasingly important for providers caring for these patients to maintain an open line of communication with the surgical and oncology teams. An understanding of the physiologic and psychological aberrations in this population is essential in providing safe perioperative care for these vulnerable and complex patients.
