Abstract

The introduction of laparoscopic technique and fast track concepts have been substantial new developments in visceral surgery during the past 15 years. Common purposes of both are the reduction of operative trauma and the increase of surgical efficiency. Numerous studies involving laparoscopy also in colorectal procedures showed benefits of the new technique like less postoperative pain, earlier mobilization and oral food intake and a shorter hospital stay. Studies comparing fast track regimens with conventional perioperative patient management are still quite rare. However, similar results as in the application of laparoscopic techniques with faster postoperative rehabilitation have been documented. In studies combining fast track and laparoscopy even further improvements seem achievable.
