Abstract

Abstract Ferroelectric liquid crystal compounds with an (S)-alkanoyl group on one side of the core and a group derived from (R)-lactic acid on the other side show very large spontaneous polarization. This study investigated their dopant properties by measuring phase transition temperature, spontaneous polarization, helical pitch, and switching time in a phenylpyrimidine-type smectic C host. The properties of these dichiral compounds were found to be useful for fast-switching ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures. Using some of these compounds, fast-switching ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures were developed for practical use.
