Abstract
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) adopts a new technique, called quad-tree based coding for inter prediction. However, deciding the optimal depth of Coding Unit (CU), namely the basic unit of the quad-tree structure, is a very time-consuming task. This paper presents a fast CU size decision algorithm to reduce the complexity and encoding time for inter prediction. The proposed algorithm shows a reasonable performance in terms of saving the total encoding time up to 40% increasing 1.4% Bjonteggrad Delta Bit Rate (BDBR) compared to the HEVC reference model (HM).
