Abstract

The internet of things (IoT) based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been employed in many applications in industrial and medical fields. Smaller codeword length and low area complexity channel coding schemes are generally chosen in these applications. Delay and power consumption are the major issues in IoT related applications. In this paper, a fast and power efficient single error correction-double error detection (SEC-DED) and single error correction-double error detection-double adjacent error correction (SEC-DED-DAEC) codes are proposed. Proposed SEC-DED and SEC-DED-DAEC codecs require lower area, delay and power compared to existing coding schemes. Improvement in area complexity of proposed codec is 34.27% compared to the existing related design. Proposed design has maximum 50.56% lesser critical path delay compared to related design. ASIC-based synthesis results provide maximum of 25.17% reduction in power and maximum 19.87% reduction in delay compared to existing SEC-DED code. The proposed codecs are suitable for IoT based WSN applications.
