Abstract

Abstract We constructed a polarimeter for Faraday rotation measurements around the M 2,3 absorption edges in Ni, which consists of a transmission polarizer, a reflection analyzer and a magnetic circuit made of Sm-Co permanent magnet. The polarizer and analyzer are Al/YB 6 multilayers. The polarizer is used to improve the degree of linear polarization of the monochromatized synchrotron radiation. The Faraday rotation angle around the M 2,3 absorption edges in Ni was obtained reproducibly. The rotation angle was almost proportional to the sample thickness. This means that the Faraday rotation spectra are scarcely affected by surface pollution and reflect bulk properties. The measured value of rotation angle was somewhat larger than the value obtained by Kramers-Kronig transform of an MCD spectrum. This may be attributed to be the surface effect or insufficiency of the degree of circular polarization in MCD experiments.
