Abstract

A new composition of Bi-substituted mixed rare-earth iron garnet, a (HoYbBi) 3 Fe 5 O 12 bulk single crystal, for use as wideband and temperature-stabilized optical isolator is investigated. To our knowledge, this is the first time that we report the new mixed rare-carth-bismuth-iron garnet and its magneto-optical properties in the' near infrared region. The value of the specific Faraday rotation of the crystal Ho 3-x-y Yb y Bi x Fe 5 O 12 (x = 1.03, y = 1.12) is about -891°/cm at λ = 1.31 μm and -767°/cm at λ = 1.55 μm The Faraday rotation temperature and wavelength characteristics of HoYbBiIG are also discussed. The Faraday rotation temperature stability S = θ F -1 (dθ F /dT) is 4.6 x10 -4 (K -1 ) at 1.55 μm wavelength in the 10 to 110 °C temperature range, which is smaller than that of YIG. The Faraday rotation wavelength coefficient (FWC) is only 0.048%. A wideband and temperature-stabilized optical isolator using HoYbBiIG crystal as Faraday rotator has been developed. The isolator is optimized at λ 0 = 1.55 μm and T 0 = 25 °C, the isolation is higher than 40 dB in the wavelength region from 1.52 to 1.58 μm throughout the temperature range from 0 to 50°C.
