Abstract

We have measured the far-infrared reflectivity and Raman scattering spectra of $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Mn}\mathrm{Se}$ polycrystals in the temperature range between $6\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ and $300\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. Several Raman active modes of the first and second order are observed and assigned using lattice dynamical calculations based on the rigid ion model. The optical parameters of the infrared-active phonons and plasmons are obtained by an oscillator fitting procedure of the reflectivity spectra. Some modes show a steplike shift of width and frequencies below ${T}_{N}$, in correlation with the antiferromagnetic spin-ordering in this material.
