Abstract
Fantasy sport began as a pen-to-paper activity. Teams were drafted, sorted, scored, and researched using ink and paper, newspaper box scores, and magazines. Leagues and drafts were formed in-person and roster moves and trades had to be without automated help. In contemporary times, the industry is reliant on digital technology to handle the aforementioned tasks in addition to creating, hosting, and sharing the fantasy sport experience and products globally. The fantasy sport industry has seen tremendous growth and many changes throughout the early part of the 21st century due to technological advancements, expansion of communicative reach, statistical information, fighting for the legitimacy and lawfulness of the activity, expansion into daily/weekly fantasy space, and navigating the sport betting landscape. This expansion and change have given fantasy sport participants more information, greater control, and an enhanced overall experience managing their teams. This chapter outlines key aspects of the relationship between fantasy and digital sport, spanning theoretical underpinnings that Uses and Gratifications, Diffusion of Innovation, and other frameworks offer fantasy sport scholars and how fantasy sport-based motivation and consumption align with the use of digital and technological means. Additionally, this chapter outlines several current trends and future developments made possible by digital technology.
