Abstract

AbstractFans and fan culture raise important issues of power, creativity, and knowledge within media sociology and cultural studies. Digital technology in particular has altered the landscape of fandom, offering new forms of interaction with the object of fandom and the wider fan community, and enhanced possibilities for creativity – a vibrant sphere of fan culture. As it stands, fan cultures and fan studies scholarship is a dynamic discipline that can inform us richly about active audiences and engagement with texts, power, consumption, and more broadly about human behavior, understandings, and interactions. This entry traces the development of fandom and fan studies and considers the discussions, concerns, and research areas that are currently igniting the field.
