Abstract

BackgroundHypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a major health problem of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. However, the world health organization estimates that at least one woman dies every-seven minutes from complications ofhypertensive disorders of pregnancy. This study aimed to assess the factors associated with hypertensive disorders among pregnant mothers. MethodsA health facility based cross-sectional study was carried out from March 15- April 15/2019. The total sample size (403) was proportionally allocated to the three public health facilities in Gambella town. Systematic sampling technique was used to select study participants. The data were entered using Epi-data version 3.1 and analyzed by SPSS version 20. Variables with p-value of less than 0.25 in binary logistic regression were entered into the multivariable logistic regression to control cofounding. P-value less than 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. ResultsMagnitude of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy was 6.8 %. Being rural residents (AOR: 2.35, 95 %CI:(1.45–3.88), Age > 35 years (AOR: 4.06:95 %CI:(1.38–11.95), unable to read and write [AOR: 2.15, 95 %CI: (1.18–3.90)], multipara (AOR: 1.96; 95 %CI (1.16–3.34) and multigravida [AOR: 2.08, 95 %CI:(1.16–3.72)] were predictors of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. ConclusionMagnitude of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy was high. Being rural residents, Age > 35 years, unable to read and write, multipara and multigravida were factors associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Therefore, to decrease this burden, health care providers should work extensively at static and community level in reducing risk factors which lead to hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.
