Abstract

County records for the fire ants, Solenopsis aurea, S. geminata, S. invicta, and S. xyloni, in Texas are reported. S. invicta was first reported in the state in 1953. Its spread in Texas is about 30 miles per year. This phenomenal spread is due to dispersal in nuptial flights and transport by water and man. Competitive displacement of native fire ants by S. invicta has been noted in Texas. The north- ward expansion of S. invicata will probably be limited by winter kill.
