Abstract

Covering 70% of the Earth's surface, our oceans interface between both atmosphere and land, and together make up a dynamic, vitally connected system that sustains a great diversity of life. Clearly, in order to understand the complex physical and biological processes that govern our world, we must be able to observe and understand the oceans. With this in mind, this commentary discusses the establishment of an Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), a key satellite-based project of NASA that aims to advance understanding and protection of the Earth's marine environment.
