Abstract

A group of healthy elderly residents of a retirement community were trained in facilitative, or helping, communication skills. Tested before and after training were 12 residents who revealed a significant increase in self-perceptions of helpfulness. Also found was a significant increase in abilities to discriminate between helpful and unhelpful ways of responding to people with problems.
