Abstract

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) polymer nanocomposites are incorporated with Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) of 20 nm diameter by solution casting. The SEM results show uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in the PVA matrix. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and the thermal decomposition temperature of PVA slightly increases with the incorporation of the MWCNTs. The DC electrical conductivity of PVA increases systematically from 4.1 × 10-13 S/cm to 8.1 × 10-8 S/cm for the highest 0.9 wt% MWCNTs. The direct band gap changes from 6.13 to 5.57 eV while the indirect band gap from 5.88 to 5.17 eV, also Urbach energy changes from 0.223 to 0.282 eV as the 0.9 wt% of MWCNTs reinforced in PVA.
