Abstract

Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image sizeSummaryA cytokinin, which delays chlorophyll destruction in excised oat leaves and causes the proliferation of tobacco pith explants in the presence of auxin, has been extracted from storage roots of Cichorium, intybus. This cytokinin is also active in promoting bud formation on tobacco pith explants, much more so than kinetin. The substance can be precipitated from aqueous solutions by AgNO3. It can also be precipitated out with Baions, an indication that it may be a phosphorylated compound. The active factor is predominantly watersoluble, and is not extracted readily from aqueous solutions by secondary butanol.
