Abstract
ABSTRACT The various sources of extra-column dispersion are considered in detail and examined, both theoretically and experimentally. It is demonstrated that, if the advantageous high efficiencies obtainable from contemporary liquid chromatography (LC) columns is to be realized, the total mobile phase conduit system, from the sample valve to the detector sensor cell, must be very carefully designed and constructed. In practice, it may be necessary to modify existing equipment to reduce extra-column dispersion, particularly if microbore columns are to be used.
